Nature around B&B De Notelaar

B&B De Notelaar is set in rural surroundings dotted with watermills and little chapels, linked by quiet country lanes. This is the region par excellence for gentle tourism.

The little chapels

Today B&B De Notelaar is located in the Biestmolenstraat, but long ago this was called "Rue Chapelle". Right next to B&B De Notelaar stands the Saint Roch chapel. A church path once ran from the Biestmolen to the "Holy Roch" chapel. It is a whitewashed brick chapel under a tiled saddle roof. The front gable bears a painted inscription "h. rochus b.v.o." and is crowned with an iron cross. The arched wooden door with wooden grille is set in a surround of sintered brick with corner blocks and ears and a curved crown and dentil moulding. A terracotta statue of Saint Roch with his dog stands among other statues of saints on the altar. Framed religious prints hang on the wall. A little further along the Stationstraat you will find the "Nood zoekt Troost" (Need Seeks Comfort) chapel. It was built in 1933 on the initiative of the J. van Durme-Van der Bauwede family. Its architectural style and special brick bond are particularly striking. The chapel was privately owned until 1996, when the owners donated it to the municipality.
